Considered by Douglas Gifford to ‘rank [among] the finest prose-poetry of Scottish childhood that we have’, Linmill Stories sees one of Scotland's finest playwrights and poets sharing his favourite childhood memories in a set of twenty-four short stories narrated in the Scots dialect. Set on and around Linmill farm, where the author was born and spent many summer holidays, this collection of Robert McLennan's stories is a beautifully-crafted evocation of a childhood spent in the fertile Clyde Valley in the early 20th century.

Robert McLellan, OBE (1907-1985) was born at Linmill, a fruit farm in Kirkfieldbank in the Clyde valley, the home of his maternal grandparents. He studied philosophy at the University of Glasgow, but was unable to complete his degree due to ill-health. He met his future wife, Kathleen Heys, while climbing in the Lake District. They were married in 1938 and settled in Arran where they lived modestly on his income as a writer. An enthusiastically receives playwright and poet, he dedicated himself to writing in Scots, in which his skill as a writer few other dramatists have matched.
